Community outreach is a valuable part of any awareness campaign, and National Assisted Living Week has been a great success in spreading the word about the many senior living options available. With the multitude of available choices, this annual week of events is an ideal way to connect the public with the many participating communities.

What is National Assisted Living Week?

National Assisted Living Week was established in 1995 by the National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL) as an annual event that would allow assisted living establishments to connect with members of their local communities. The week -long open house, with it’s scheduled events makes it easy for the public to learn about assisted living and to tour the communities and get their questions answered in person.

The events also serve as an opportunity to bring seniors and their families together with assisted living community employees, volunteers and residents to discuss the senior living options available to them. Normally busy schedules are opened up to promote friendships and connections among all the event’s participants, making for a joyful and productive week.

Common events include:

  • Free breakfast or lunch during an open house
  • Guest speakers
  • Art activities and exhibitions
  • Musical performances
  • Athletic or fitness events

National Assisted Living Week for 2013 is September 8 – 14

2013 theme: Homemade Happiness

The 2013 theme of “Homemade Happiness” was chosen to emphasize the important connection that takes place in the communities between the residents, staff and families, as they build warm, vibrant and supportive relationships.

Each assisted living community will be planning its own events that will not only bring these groups together, but also attract the attention of local media. Operators of assisted living communities are encouraged to engage local newspapers, television stations, websites, and other local organizations to spread the word about National Assisted Living Week.

Seniors and their families can mark their calendars now to be sure not to miss the opportunity to tour communities and learn more about the security, care, comfort and activities that are provided.
