A friend of mine posted a quote on Facebook the other day that made me laugh out loud: “My grandmother started walking five miles a day when she was sixty. She’s ninety-seven now, and we don’t know where the hell she is. ~ Ellen DeGeneres.

Most of us know by now how important exercise is for keeping us healthy and fit at any age. But recently there has been quite a lot of evidence that shows how vital physical movement and fitness is for maintaining healthy brain function and memory.  Many senior communities have incorporated this knowledge into their activities programs.

For your next community search on  you can see on each of our community pages if they have exercise, fitness and brain fitness programs. All communities that serve residents with Alzheimer’s and related dementias should have these listed. Some great examples of communities that serve residents with memory care needs and have specialized fitness programs are AgeSong communities, AlmaVia of San Francisco and Rhoda Goldman Plaza.
